Jenny Mikakos to open CLAN’s new Melbourne office
The Victorian Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos will officially open the new Melbourne office of Care Leavers Australasia Network (CLAN) on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 10.30am.
The office is located on Level 2, Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
CLAN CEO Leonie Sheedy said the new office would be a critical support centre for Care Leavers.
“We are delighted to have the Victorian Minister for Families and Children officially open our new, larger office. In doing so, she is acknowledging the important work of our organisation and the huge need for support for very vulnerable Victorians,” Ms Sheedy said.
“The Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse revealed the true extent of the ongoing trauma experienced by people who have been abused in Australian Orphanages, Children’s Homes and Foster Care.
“Care Leavers carry lifelong physical, psychological and emotional scars as a result of the abuse and mistreatment they endured. In addition to providing a vital support network, CLAN provides counselling services and helps people search for personal records and family history as well as access other important services they may need.
“When the National Redress Scheme comes into effect in July, we expect an influx of inquiries from people needing help to navigate the new system.
“CLAN would like to see the Federal Government’s National Redress Scheme become fully national before July. That requires all State Governments, Churches and Charities to “opt-in” to the scheme and, so far, there is no sign of that happening,” Ms Sheedy said.
