CLAN thanks Royal Commissioners for ”listening and believing us”
Australian Care Leavers will gather together on Friday morning, February 9, to personally thank the team who delivered the Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse.
Newly retired Royal Commission Chair, Justice Peter McClellan will be among the many guests at the Thankyou Morning Tea being hosted by CLAN at their Bankstown office, 462 Chapel Road, Bankstown, NSW, on Friday morning, February 9, at 11am.
CLAN CEO Leonie Sheedy said it was important that the Royal Commissioners were publically thanked for their extraordinary work over the past five years.
“Justice McClellan and his team did an outstanding job. They listened to us, believed us and treated us with respect. For many Care Leavers this was the first time they’d been validated and acknowledged in their lives,” Ms Sheedy said.
Guests at the morning tea will include Assistant Minister for Children and Families, David Gillespie, Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services and CLAN Patron Jenny Macklin, Federal
Member for Blaxland and CLAN Patron, Jason Clare and Federal Member for Corio and CLAN Patron Richard Marles.
“We will honour Clannies no longer with us with one minute’s silence and acknowledge our achievements by congratulating CLAN Vice President Frank Golding who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
“In addition, Justice Jennifer Coate will donate her green jacket to CLAN’s National Orphanage Museum and Bob Atkinson will donate a blue and yellow tie he wore to acknowledge the colours of CLAN.
“We cannot underestimate the Royal Commission and what it achieved, for many Care Leavers on a very personal level and for Australia as a nation.”
