Presenting our Petition in Canberra 22nd february 2010
From the left: Warren Hewitt, Senator Trish Crossin, Steve Irons MP, Geraldine Hewitt, Damian Adams, Caroline Lorbach, Patrice Lorbach, Leonie Hewitt, Peter Browne & Jason Clare MP |
What happened at the Canberra Meeting |
The meeting was attended by approximately 30 senators, MPs and advisors from all parties. We started with Damian & geraldine speaking about donor conception from the point of view of donor conceived people. Caroline then spoke about legislation and international conventions to which Australia is a signatory. Peter let us know a little bit about his edperiences as a donor who has been in contact with one of the donor offspring he helped to create. Leonie spoke about how it has been possible for some donors to donate multiple times at a number of clinics. Patrice & Warren talked about how they feel about their children. Damian finished by telling us about how anonymity affects not just him but his children & future generations.
After our presentation there were a number of questions regarding registers and the right to have access to information.
Trish Crossin is going to take the proposal of an inquiry into donor conception to the Legal & Constitutional Affairs References Committee as it was thought by everyone that this would be the most appropriate committee. We are currently helping Trish in drawing up some draft terms of reference & list of possible witnesses.
Steve Irons MP for Swan in WA made a wonderful speech in the House of representatives on Monday evening (22nd Feb). Read his speech here

Have you ever wondered whether you might be related to someone you meet? That is a question that crosses the minds of thousands of Australians everyday.
Why?
Because they are born from donated sperm, eggs or embryos and are denied access to information that tells them who their half siblings are.
With donor conception we are now repeating the same mistakes made in adoption, the stolen generation and Forgotten Australians; the need to know where you come from and who you are related to.
We need to do something about this now!
