Don't forget ABC Collectors this Friday at 8pm on ABC1 and Monday 6 July at 6.05pm on ABC2 for a segment on CLAN's National Orphanage Museum. |
Care Leavers Australia Network (CLAN) is a support and advocacy group for people brought up in care away from their family as state wards or Home children raised in Children's Homes, orphanages or other institutions, or in foster care. CLAN is also for anyone who has a close family member who was placed in "care".
Many of these people are now middle-aged or older but still carry the burden of unresolved issues from this past. Our aim is to raise community awareness of these issues, and to campaign for government assistance to redress them. CLAN welcomes everyone who has been affected by the "care" system, regardless of your background or heritage - we are here to help.
Contact CLAN on 9709 4520 or 0425-204-747 or email us at support@clan.org.au. Care Leavers who grew up in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the ACT, and who still live in the state, can contact CLAN free on 1800-008-774. QLD is the only state that that does not fund the 1800 number, despite our many requests. If you'd like to see this changed, ring or email Premier Anna Bligh's office, or ask your state member to lobby on your behalf.
CLAN welcomes and needs donations, and all money received helps us to continue providing this essential service to all care leavers. All donations over $2 are tax-deductable. If you would like to make a donation, please send a cheque or money order to CLAN Inc, PO Box 164 Georges Hall, NSW, 2198. We are also very happy to receive gifts of stamps.

Bring along friends if you wish, we welcome everyone who comes along for the day. We are still working on getting a sponser for a Notice Board with all boys’ names on it to be put on a wall of the Home for all to see. Riverview Reunion T-shirts will be available again this year and all proceeds from the sales will go towards the following year’s Reunion luncheon, in 2010. We have been very busy this year getting sponsers for the day and as always its gets harder each year but we will keep trying to help make this a successful day like last year, and with your presence I am sure it will be.
Last year we raised $237.00 which was a great effort indeed and to those who donated money to our cause we say a big Thank You. The Salvation Army allowing us to use this venue each year is big help to us all for without their assistance we would be struggling.
If you have any suggestions at all for the day’s event please contact me. We might have a few speeches from the Guests so anyone wishing to speak please let me know on the day. Looking forward to seeing you all.

CLAN was in Canberra on June 25 when Senator Rachel Siewert WA reported on the Senate’s review of these 2 reports. Here’s a report on the day from CLAN committee members Leonie and Frank Golding.
The tabling of the Senate Review today was a triumph. About 150 Care Leavers in attendance, most of them were CLAN members.
The Report focuses on the apology from the Federal government, redress, national coordination, input from the churches and charities . The Report is already on the internet– go to CLAN website for the link. www.clan.org.au or ring for a copy of the report to be sent to you (02 )62773515
Speeches were made today by Senators Rachel Siewert (Greens), Claire Moore (ALP), Gary Humphries (Liberal), Sue Boyce (Liberal), Nick Xenophon (independent). This display of cross-Party support was extremely encouraging. Speeches had to be kept short but they were very powerful speeches..CLAN’s patrons Richard Marles, MP Corio, Jason Clare MP Blaxland as well as Steve Irons MP for Swan WA also Senators Moore Qld, Siewert WA and Sue Boyce Qld showed their support and spoke to the Clannies ..
The Senators spoke about the importance of national leadership including a national apology; redress schemes in Vic, NSW and SA; better coordination of services through COAG; importance of input by churches; and the need to keep up the pressure to bring about implementation of the 16 Recommendations (No13 being recurrent funding for CLAN).
The press conference was dominated by Care Leavers and it was lively and passionate. CLAN was interviewed by SBS News and an independent film maker who is making a documentary.
Thank you to Senator Claire Moore who arranged for the care leavers to have lunch in Parliament House. It was a wonderful way for all care leavers to end the day. Thank you to all of our members who travelled great distances to be in Canberra. It was wonderful to see everyone there and have your support.
