Care Leavers Australasia Network (CLAN) is calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to establish a National Independent Redress Scheme for Australia's Care Leavers.
CLAN executive officer Leonie Sheedy says Prime Minister Turnbull, a Parliamentary Patron of CLAN, now has the opportunity to deliver fair and equitable compensation for the many thousands of people who grew up in Australia's Orphanages, Children?s Homes, foster care and mental institutions.
The Royal Commission has recommended a national Redress scheme for victims of child sexual abuse be established by the Federal Government and largely funded by the institutions in which the abuse occurred, Ms Sheedy said.
"CLAN welcomes the Royal Commission?s recommendations and we welcome the joint letter by the Attorneys-General of all states and territories (except the Northern Territory) asking the Federal Government to make clear its intentions on this issue."
"But CLAN believes all forms of abuse suffered by children in Australian institutions should be compensated by a National Independent Redress Scheme. We know there is more than one way to harm a child."
Mr Turnbull has visited the CLAN?s National Orphanage Museum in Bankstown, Sydney, and seen the tragic remnants of young lives damaged beyond repair. He has told us that he believes us and accepts the truth of our history.

In his 2009 Apology to the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants, Mr Turnbull said
"I hope this apology helps restore dignity and respect. We are apologising for failing to believe you, for failing to protect you".
Now is the time for the Australian Government to establish a National Independent Redress Scheme that restores dignity and respect to the thousands of Australians who were not believed and not protected as children.
Time is running out for many Care Leavers and we encourage Mr Turnbull to establish a National Independent Redress Scheme as a matter of urgency.
