On the 16 November 2009 Australia acknowledged and apologised to the Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants. As announced in the Apology, the National Library is conducting an oral history project to record the lives and experiences of Forgotten Australians and Former Child Migrants. Interviews will be conducted across Australia and will be preserved in the National Library. The 3 year project aims to document a rounded history of the experiences of children in institutional and out of home care and the lifelong impact of these experiences on their lives and their families. It is a sobering thought for us to remember that over 500,000 Australian children spent years living in institutional care up until the 1970s. This number includes Indigenous children and child migrants sent to Australia from the United Kingdom. Today many survivors of this experience struggle to cope with their memories of harsh discipline, military style regimentation and lack of emotional support during their all important developing years. The homes were run by both government and non-government organisations. Survivors report that they were regularly cold and sterile environments. ... more

Child Migrants Fund - Family Restoration Fund
The 6 million dollar Family Restoration Fund was announced by former UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, on 24 February 2010 as part of the apology to former child migrants. The Fund has been set up by the Child Migrants Trust with a grant awarded by the UK Government to support family reunions for former child migrants who were sent to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Zimbabwe (the former Rhodesia) as part of child migration schemes.
