CLAN’s funding comes from memberships, small annual grants from some of the states, annual donations from a very few past providers, and from occasional donations from individuals. The state government grants are generally between $10,000 and $15,000 each; the past provider grants are usually $5,000 and occasionally $10,000. Queensland gives CLAN no funding at all and does not fund the 1800 number. Western Australia funds the service we provide for the WA Redress scheme (on a fee for service basis) but gives us no other funding. Any donations we receive are of course unpredictable and we cannot assume we will receive them, so we cannot factor them into our forward planning. In the same way, we cannot assume each year that the state governments will renew their annual grant. CLAN would love stop charging membership fees but until we are guaranteed on going funding, it is the only way we can ensure the service survives.
This is where we need your help. We need care leavers and supporters to let the politicians know how important it is to fund CLAN. You can ring or write to the Prime Minister, to the Minister for FaCHSIA, Jenny Macklin, or to the Premier in your state. Their contact details are below. We also suggest you contact your own local federal and state member too. CLAN has created a pro-forma letter that you can download and use for this- copy and paste into Word and add to it, changing the contact details every time you use it.
