Randwick destitute children's asylum
Hindsight, ABC Radio National
This documentary explores the layers of history on a particular site inside Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, and how this history of pain and suffering resonates with us today.
Over 5000 children passed through the Randwick Destitute Children's Asylum from 1852 until its closure in 1916, when it became a military hospital. Most children left the asylum as apprentices, or were released to their parents or guardians. Some 216 children died inside the Home, and most of these were buried in the adjacent Asylum cemetery.
In the mid-1990s a proposed POW hospital redevelopment included a huge archaeological project to locate the cemetery and the children's remains. Finally the children could be named and memorialised, and their stories told. The documentary interweaves the history of the site with the recollections of people who worked on the archaeological project and who cared deeply about the site's fate, including relatives of some the asylum children.
They are also wanting to locate some former inmates of the children's Homes which were involved in vaccine trials.
This is a very important history and the only way to tell it properly is to find some people who might have been involved and who feel strongly about it.
If you were involved in these vacines, please contact Jeannine Baker by email: baker.jeannine@abc.net.au
